About Smitty’s Little Farm

Smitty’s Little Farm was created by a mother-and-daughter team—Colleen (that’s me) and my daughter Jennifer.

The name “Smitty” comes from my dad and Jen’s grandpa, a larger-than-life character with a gift for storytelling and a deep respect for history, nature, and practicality. In the 1960s, Smitty toured the Great Plains, Desert Southwest, and Rocky Mountain West presenting a version of American history told from the perspective of the Native Americans of the Plains—long before that conversation was comfortable. He did so in full historical costume, approved by the Sioux Council in South Dakota. It was controversial, bold, and rooted in respect.

That same respect—for what’s natural, native, and genuinely useful—runs through everything we do.

Smitty’s love of the natural world was matched by my mother Elaine’s ingenuity. A legendary penny-pincher, she could whip up just about anything out of her tiny kitchen. Between the two of them, our family became the people others called when they needed a remedy, a recipe, or a practical solution.

After moving to the high country in 1985, trips to the grocery store were often harder than they were worth. Making our own health, bath, and beauty products became less of a hobby and more of a necessity.

Jennifer is our mad scientist-in-residence (kidding… probably), and I handle most of the growing and marketing. Together, we create small-batch, thoughtfully made products rooted in tradition, experience, and common sense.

We encourage you to read all disclaimers and warnings. There are many powers that be who would like to dismiss herbalism entirely and insist that plants and herbs can’t possibly make a difference in your life. We disagree.

While modern herbalism can’t cure everything, it’s equally clear that Western medicine has its limitations. Choosing balance, control, and a more natural way of living is just that—a choice.

If we start where we can, listen to what our bodies are asking for, and choose the healthier option when possible, we’re moving in the right direction. Our products are simply one more step toward that goal.
